The debate over who is the greater footballer between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi often comes down to their impressive records in the UEFA Champions League. Ronaldo and Messi are two of the greatest goalscorers not just currently, but in the history of the sport. Much of their success has come in Europe's biggest club competition.



Ronaldo has scored 140 goals in 182 Champions League appearances so far in his career. This gives him a stunning scoring ratio of 0.77 goals per game in the competition. Ronaldo also holds the record for most Champions League goals scored for a single club with 105 for Real Madrid. He has won the Champions League five times with Manchester United and Real Madrid.







Meanwhile, Messi has scored 125 goals in 149 Champions League matches for an even more eye-popping ratio of 0.84 goals per game. He has scored 120 of those Champions League goals for Barcelona, the most ever for a single club in the competition. However, Messi has lifted the Champions League trophy four times compared to Ronaldo's five triumphs.





While the numbers are close, Ronaldo appears to have the edge in terms of total Champions League goals scored and trophies won. However, Messi's superior goal-scoring rate in the competition cannot be ignored. Both players' Champions League stats are truly astonishing and a testament to their otherworldly ability. The debate over who is greater will likely continue for years to come, but what is clear is the Champions League has been lucky to have two phenomenal talents battling it out.
